Upcoming show: Pixies

The Pixies will be playing two shows at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington DC, on November 30th and December 1st.

This tour is in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their album Doolittle, and will feature tracks and b-sides from that era.

Doolittle and Surfer Rosa are my favorite Pixies albums.  I can’t wait!

  1. I guess my next question is – how do we know which ones are b-sides? I want to learn those songs before the show so I’m not dumbstruck by ‘em!

    • Good question! I’m guessing the best way is to listen to the album “Complete B-Sides” which includes most/all of the Pixies B-sides. I don’t really know how to identify which were “Doolittle” era b-sides, though. I’ve heard “Manta Ray” is a b-side from Doolittle, and maybe “Weird at my school,” but I’m not sure. Here is the track listing from “Complete B-sides”

      1.River Euphrates (version two)
      2.Vamos (Live)
      3.In Heaven (Live)
      4.Manta Ray
      5.Weird at my school
      6.Dancing the Manta Ray
      7.Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf)
      8.Into the White
      9.Bailey’s Walk
      10. Make Believe
      11.I’ve been waiting for you
      12.The thing
      13.Velvety instrumental version
      14.Winterlong
      15.Santo
      16.Theme from Narc
      17.Build High
      18.Evil Hearted You
      19.Letter to Memphis (instrumental)

  2. Nowadays, the only real way to tell is research. In the old days it was easy, since the B-side referred to the songs released on the B side of a single that were often not included in albums.

  3. Actually, the wikipedia page Evan gave – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complete_%27B%27_Sides – mentions what songs are comprise the original singles.

It’s very easy to click on the 2 from Doolittle, scroll down, and see which ones are Doolittle b-sides.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_Gone_to_Heaven :

    Manta Ray
    Weird At My School
    Dancing The Manta Ray

    Into the White
    Bailey’s Walk

The hard part is remembering the b-sides album exists, which I didn’t, cause I’ve still only listened to Doolittle.
